Essential Connor Storrie Viewing: Why ‘Heated Rivalry’ Fans Need to Watch ‘Riley’ Immediately

Connor Storrie is currently monopolizing a specific corner of the cultural conversation via Heated Rivalry. While his portrayal of Ilya Rozanov is the catalyst for this recent attention, viewing it in isolation ignores the groundwork laid by his earlier indie appearances. To understand the mechanics of Storrie’s current performance, one needs to look back at Benjamin Howard’s 2023 drama, Riley.
Connor Storrie In Riley

It is tempting to claim I “knew it all along,” but I wanted to verify that instinct against the actual text. I dug up the prep file for my interview with director Ben Howard from September 14, 2023, looking for the first time I wrote Storrie’s name down.
It was there, between bullet points, between the opening shots of the full and “locker room culture”, a specific note to myself:
CONNOR STORRIE STANDOUT

Even back then, in a supporting role as Liam, the energy was undeniable. I asked Howard about it at the time because it felt like watching a lead actor.
Ben Howard, Director of Riley, on the “Serendipitous” Casting of Connor Storrie

I recently revisited the transcript of my original interview with director Benjamin Howard to see exactly how that casting came together.
At the time, Howard was effusive about his leads, Jake Holley and J.B. Waterman, describing the set as a “playground” where they could bounce ideas off each other. The bar for performance was set incredibly high. However, when I pivoted the conversation to Storrie, Howard conceded that his casting was the outlier: a decision that was far less inevitable than the rest.
Ben Howard: “As for Connor, he’s a scene-stealer. After watching early cuts, people asked, ‘Who is this guy?’ and said everything was perfect as it was. Connor came on late. We had a casting call and saw a few actors, but none seemed to fit what the role demanded. Connor was one of them, and he was excellent, but I wasn’t entirely sure he was the right fit at first. It was a back-and-forth with my casting director. I was close to committing to another actor, but I wasn’t fully convinced until Connor came in, and then it clicked.”
For fans fascinated by Storrie’s ability to handle the linguistic demands of his current role, Riley offers a fun precursor. Howard revealed that the character’s academic background was completely rewritten to accommodate Storrie’s actual skills.
Ben Howard: “It was a quick pivot into getting Connor locked in. The role was originally going to be in Spanish class instead of a French class, so the character would have to be fluent in Spanish. So I needed someone who speaks this foreign language. Connor just so happens to speak French fluently, so it was easy. It was perfect. It was serendipitous.”
The pivot served the production well. Storrie utilized the rewritten character traits to ground a role that could have easily felt secondary. Riley documents this early technical skill set clearly, making it a practical watch for anyone interested in his actual range.
