God Save Texas at Sundance
“God Save Texas” is a three-part anthology premiering on HBO Max on February 27th from directors Richard Linklater, Alex Stapleton, and Iliana Sosa.
“Tales of Texas told through the lenses of three directors, chronicling the state’s past, present and future.”
Before the world premiere at Sundance, I chatted with all three directors and author Lawrence Wright, who wrote the book this series is based on.
They were asked, “What IS Texas?” While their answers varied, director Alex Stapleton may have said it best when she noted, “It’s a big f****ing paradox.”
Iliana Sosa‘s answer explored the complexity of Texas, acknowledging that there is a lot of “texture” to the state – physically but also culturally. Sosa even admits that she has a “love-hate” relationship with the state.
Richard Linklater went on to explain that the notion of a “Western” has an “oversized” and “damaging” place in our psyche. In reality, the “truth is really more fascinating,” and it’s this truth that he hopes to explore as he forays into the world of documentary filmmaking.
Alex Stapleton expands on this “paradox” by highlighting how Texas has a government that is “bananas” but also has beautiful communities living together “despite their race and socioeconomic status.” She hopes that people can see “The Real Texas”.
