BUDDY (2026) is the latest horror-comedy from Casper Kelly, creator of Too Many Cooks and Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, turning the familiar language of 1990s children's television into something violent, funny, and increasingly existential. In this BUDDY review, I also speak with director Casper Kelly about the film's influences, casting, cinematography, aspect ratios, sound design, and some of the Easter eggs buried inside its twisted children's TV world.Kelly discusses how Barney, Dora the Explorer, Blue's Clues, Pee-wee's Playhouse, and Thomas the Tank Engine helped shape the fictional It's Buddy!, while he and cinematographer Zach Kuperstein worked to recreate the texture of 1990s television through cameras, resolution, colour, changing aspect ratios, and even shifts from stereo to 5.1 sound. We also dig into some of BUDDY's more existential references, including the fake credit for Lou Boltzmann and its connection to Ludwig Boltzmann and the Boltzmann Brain. Kelly confirms the reference — and that I was the first person to catch it — before we get into another possible Easter egg involving Nick Bostrom and simulation theory.Cast of BUDDY:
Cristin Milioti as Grace
Delaney Quinn as Freddy
Topher Grace as Ben
Keegan-Michael Key as Buddy
Michael Shannon as Willie
Patton Oswalt as StrappyAfter playing Sundance, SXSW, Fantasia, and other festivals, BUDDY hits theatres August 28, 2026.More from Points of Review
